Basic Guide to Middle East

Countries included within the Middle East where most Filipinos work are Sauri Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Qatar are Muslim countries. Their government and its citizenry follow Islam rules and rites and locals and foreigners alike must respect and adhere to their customs and traditions.

Here are some facts that you should bear in mind should you land a job there:

 

  • Saudi Arabia prohibits narcotics, pork products and pornographic books.
  • Iqama or residence permit must always be carried by expatriates.
  • Transferring to another employer with existing employment contract is strictly prohibited by the labor law of Saudi.
  • Joining in any political or religious demonstrations is not advisable.
  • Possession, smuggling and trafficking illegal or regulated drugs even in residual amounts is considered a criminal offense that can result in severe punishments.
  • It is not advisable to bring religious items such as rosary, holy images.
  • Permission from the parties concerned shall be seek first prior to taking pictures of any government facility, mosque, airports, and residential houses.
  • Ramadan or holy fasting must be respected by non-Muslims through avoiding eating or drinking in public places.
  • Gambling and alcoholic drinks are also prohibited. Likewise, do not drink and drive and appear drunk in public.
  • Smiling at Arab men might be mistaken for a romantic interest while staring at Arab women is considered rude.
  • Always use proper names of person or persons you’re talking to and do not point your fingers when addressing them.
  • Couples are not allowed to display affection in public. Men and women that are living together out of wedlock is also strictly forbidden.
  • Foreigners are expected to respect Muslims’ prayer times.

Breaking News: Federal Skilled Worker Program in Canada Re-Opened

The Government of Canada announced new occupations and caps for the popular Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program. Additional important information has been announced for the Federal Skilled Trades (FST) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC) programs.

Effective May 1, 2014, the FSW will be accepting an overall total of 25,000 new applications. Applicants must have at least one year of work experience in one of 50 eligible occupations. A maximum of 1,000 applications will be accepted per eligible occupation.

The FST program is for applicants with experience in a skilled trade. As of May 1, the FST program will be accepting a maximum of 5,000 applications for review. All NOC B level trades will be eligible for this program. This amounts to a total of 90 different occupations.
