DFA: Stop sending OFWs to Somalia

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) proposed that deployment of land and sea-based overseas Filipino workers to Somalia should be ban due to the increasing number of ships being hijacked by pirates in the boundaries of Somalia and Nigeria.

The proposal was made by DFA Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Esteban Conejos Jr. during the inter-agency meeting of DFA with the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE), Office of the Vice-President, and the four manning agencies of the Filipino crew hijacked in Somalia.

Travel Advisory in Saudi Arabia

DoLE has issued an advisory to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who will leave and enter the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) regarding bringing of cash and jewelries amounting to over SR60,000 or its equivalent in other currency (more or less Php 681,000) to declare it upon arrival or departure to avoid confiscation or penalties.

There are available declaration forms in all entry points in Saudi. Bringing in of cash and precious metals over SR60,000 is not only an act of money laundering but also makes one a suspect of funding terrorist. Thus OFWs are advice to obey the rule since KSA is strictly implementing it in accordance with the Article 14 of the Anti-Money Laundering Law of the Kingdom.

Prohibited Items When Entering Singapore

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) warned Filipinos who are planning to enter
Singapore to avoid bringing porno magazines, gun-shaped lighters, and chewing tobacco.

The advisory was issued after a report from the Philippine Embassy in Singapore that a Filipino was apprehended due to possession of a knuckle duster. This is punishable by imprisonment and caning under the Arms Offences Act of Singapore.

POEA Suspends Agency for Charging Excessive Fees

The POEA has suspended the license of JFG Career Agency as well as its counter part in Canada, September Star, Inc, that were found collecting placement fees from OFWs who are bound for jobs in Canada.

The Mr. Tyson J. Kefebre, owner if A&W restaurant in Canada, filed the complaint when one of the 16 OFWs he hired told him that each of them paid some US$1,500.00 to JFG Career Agency and were compelled to sign promissory notes that they would pay additional US$4,500.00 to September Star in scheduled installments.
