The worsening political situation in Egypt prompted the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to raised alert level 1 upon the recommendation of the Philippine Embassy in Cairo.
Under this alert, the government agency reminds Filipinos in Egypt to stay safe by remaining indoors and avoiding areas that may endanger them now that the political and security situation in Cairo is unstable. They should also take all unnecessary precautions and be alert for any news and advisories from the Philippine Embassy.
The DFA Spokesperson and Assistant Secretary, Raul Hernandez said, “Upon the recommendation of our embassy in Cairo, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs has raised crisis Alert Level 1 over Egypt. As far as the Philippines is concerned, our priority is the safety of the nearly 6,000 Filipinos in Egypt.”
Round the clock duty officers are now working in the embassy and answering communication lines as the Philippines closely monitor the security situation in Egypt. They are also closely coordinating with the Filipino community and other foreign missions there.
Hernandez said, “Our citizens should likewise be on standby for any advisories that the embassy might issue regarding developments on the peace and order situation in that country.”
