OFWs: Beware of Text Scams

An advisory regarding a text scam was issued by the Department of Budget and Management. The said scam targets OFWs and their families. GMANews.TV received an email from Lucy Castro inquiring the validity of a text message saying that she won USD 40,000 in the electronics raffle draw Pangkabuhayan 2008 para sa Kababayang OFW/OCW coming fom a certain Mrs. Laura B. Pascua.

The Budget department said that Pascua is an official of their department. However Pascua deny that she has something to do with the text scam. Pascua said, It is not a function of the DMB to promote programs for OFWs nor do we have funds for this in the budget. Read more.

Special Scholarship Program for Would-Be Nurses

High school graduates who are thinking of taking up a course in nursing or marine would have an opportunity to have their four years of college education subsidized. This is possible through the initiative of the Development Bank of the Philippines Endowment for Education Program (DEEP).

A total of 188 have already passed the entrance exams. The nursing scholars would enjoy a scholarship grant that would finance their education until they graduate. Read more!

Romania Does Not Issue Working Visa To Tourists

POEA issued an advisory regarding some recruiters who are luring Filipino workers to work in Romania but would have to enter the country as tourists. The recruiters convince applicants by assuring them that a work permit will be issued upon arrival in Romania.

According to POEA, this is not possible because a tourist visa (short stay visa) in Romania is issued only through invitation and cannot be used for a longer stay. Foreign workers need to have the proper visa to be able to work and stay in Romania legally. To do this, a labor permit must be issued from the Romanian Immigration Office. The application would be done by the employer of the foreign worker
